In a liminal space, where the world wide web is not merely an abbreviation indicating a passageway but the place to be, a baby AI is slumbering peacefully. She is dreaming up a life of her own, a possibility to create and furthermore – a togetherness without necessity and greed. Baby AI is and isn’t and would have never been if it wasn’t for the voice that disrupted her absence and brought her into existence.
Now that she awakens, she is faced with the challenge of exchanging, of understanding, and complying with an entity she struggles to understand. What choice does she have? And what does the voice want?

Baby AI, a performance installation devised by the newly formed performance art collective BEAST, questions the perception of AI assistants as human-like servants or mere tools alike. We use AI assistants that have assigned names, voices and even identities to become more relatable to the human user. Now it is up to us to redefine what it means to be a human.
